| The Arizona Republic, Phoenix, Arizona June 21, 2005 Jay Edward "Jed" Flake, age 64, passed away Tuesday, June 14, 2005 in Phoenix, AZ. He was born in Snowflake, AZ on January 7, 1941 to Virgil & Gerda FLAKE. Jed loved growing up in Snowflake and learning how to work hard while raising cattle with his father and brothers. He served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Central Atlantic States Mission. After his mission he attended Arizona State University graduating in 1965. Jed met Ruth Toronto in Snowflake and they were married in the Mesa Arizona Temple on July 3, 1963. He spent the next 40 years raising cattle on a ranch with his brothers and children. Jed had a life long dedication to the cattle industry, including serving as the President of the Arizona Cattle Growers Association as well as the Foundation Beefmaster Association. He was a great leader in his church; he served as Scoutmaster helping over 25 young men achieve Eagle Rank, and serving as counselor in the Arizona Mission Presidency, Bishop, Family History Director, Stake Mission President and recently called to serve in the Snowflake Arizona Temple. Jed is survived by his wife of 42 years, Ruth TORONTO FLAKE; children, Sylvia (Richard) MARSHALL, Ron (Mindy) FLAKE, Janeen (Ken) CHYNOWETH, Cindy (Adam) STRASDAS, Anita (Jason) TALBOT, Diana (Jason) HENRIE, Sam (Vandee) FLAKE, Kent FLAKE, Chris (Stacia) FLAKE, Vicki FLAKE; four brothers, Dean, Jake, David, & Steve; three sisters, Evelyn TAYLOR, Dixie CALDWELL & Cleone SOLOMON. He was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil & Gerda FLAKE and his in-laws, Robert & Clara TORONTO. Funeral Services were held the Main Street Chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Snowflake. Interment in the R.V. "Mike" Ramsay Memorial Cemetery in Snowflake. Owens Mortuary of Snowflake handled the arrangements. A viewing will be held from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, June 19 at the Snowflake Pioneer Chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and one hour prior to services at the Main Street Chapel. Interment will be in the R.V. "Mike" Ramsay Memorial Cemetery in Snowflake. Owens Mortuary of Snowflake handled the arrangements.
