Betty L. (Onnen) Kluender

Betty L. Kluender, 79, of Phoenix, Arizona departed this life on May 26, 2005. Born in Plymouth County, Iowa on January 29, 1926, she is the oldest daughter of Fred Onnen and Margaret JANS ONNEN.

Her husband of 61 years, Al KLUENDER, and son Doug, both of Phoenix, survive her.

Son Allan David preceded her in death in 1971.

Betty was able to achieve her childhood dreams and so much more. She fulfilled the first of her dreams of living in the American Southwest when she and Al & the boys moved to Phoenix in 1952. They lived in Gila Bend during 1955 and 1956 but returned to Phoenix permanently thereafter.

Betty pursued on the second of her dreams when she enrolled at Phoenix College in 1963. Graduating with Honors in 1966, she then enrolled at Arizona State University. Two years later, again graduating with honors, she began a 21-year career in primary education in the Deer Valley School District.

Her dream of visiting the Canadian Rocky Mountains and seeing Lake Louise were realized several times over. She and Al spent summers traveling the United States and Canada in a succession of travel trailers and motor homes. In addition, they were able to embark on travels that included, the Caribbean Islands, Scandinavia, Hawaii, Northern Europe, the Panama Canal and Mexico.

Brother Walter ONNEN and sister Norma MILLER preceded Betty in death.

Survivors include sisters Dolores DREESZEN (South Sioux City, Nebraska); Millie LAWRENCE; (Salix, Iowa); and Stella McCONAHIE (Montague, CA). Betty will be greatly missed by the many friends, in-laws, cousins and the large number of nieces and nephews she leaves behind.

The services were at Grace Lutheran Church, where she worshiped for over 50 years. The church is located at 5600 W. Palmaire Ave., Glendale, AZ.

Internment will be at Resthaven Cemetery, 6300 W. Northern Ave., Glendale, AZ.
