Sam Vance

Sam Vance, passed away on Monday, February 24, 2003 in Scottsdale Healthcare at the age of 89.

He was born in Dobrica, Serbia in 1913. In 1920, he came to the United States with his mother, Dafina and brother Louis to join his father Ziva. Sam was raised in Detroit, Michigan, and spent his early adult life in Akron, Ohio where he was a grocer.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and participated in the Battle of the Bulge. In 1954, Sam moved his family to Phoenix where he began a career with Valley National Bank, retiring as a Trust Officer in 1979.

In his retirement, he became an accomplished painter in oils. Sam was a founding member of the St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Church in Phoenix. He served on the church Board of Directors for many years and was the first president of the church choir. In addition to providing spiritual guidance for Sam, the church was a center of the Serbian culture he loved so dearly. An amateur musician, he played the music of his native land on the accordion for festivals in the local Serbian-American community.

Sam is survived by his beloved wife Catherine, sons George and wife Martha, and Stephan and wife Kate, and grandchildren, Samuel and wife Candace, Amelia Vance, and Alexander Barge.

The family will receive visitors Thursday, February 26, from 6:00 PM 8:00 PM at St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Church.

A pomen will be held at 7:00 PM. The funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, February 28, also at St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Church, 4436 E. McKinley St., Phoenix, AZ 85008. May his memory be eternal!
