Debra Jan Smith-Givens of Prescott, Ariz., passed away in her home, surrounded by friends, her two cats and her husband, on March 19, 2008.

Debra was born in San Francisco, Calif., on Sept. 9, 1954. She moved to Dallas, Texas, in 1966, where she met and married her first husband, Carter Smith, in 1975. They lived in several places including Friday Harbor, Santa Cruz and North Hollywood, Calif., before moving to Prescott to join a spiritual community in 1987.

In her 20 years in Prescott, Debra worked at Nolaz Restaurant, CB Mail Service, Form Flo West, Intercal, and, most recently, Zila Nutriceuticals. She met her current husband John Givens in 1996. They were together nine years before marrying in 2005.

Debra was an exceptional quilter, crocheter, knitter and overall maker of “stuff.” To the very end of her life, she always had at least three or four projects going.

Besides Debra’s passion for fabric and sewing arts, she loved her house and yard, her cats, her family and friends, Japanese food, good wine, and sitting in the sun reading. She especially loved her husband John.

The last two years of Debra’s life were defined by her battle against CNS lymphoma. To the end, she remained grateful for whatever she had, didn’t complain and never gave up hope. She inspired her husband with her courage as he inspired her with his devotion, and together they found a love that was beyond anything they had ever known.

Besides her husband, Debra is survived by her mother, Jamie Ibrahim, stepfather Maher Ibrahim, Dottie Smith, and many other relatives and friends.

A memorial will be 3 p.m. Saturday, April 12, 2008, at Debra’s home.

In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, 3877 N. 7th St. #300, Phoenix AZ 85014.

Also, a special thanks to Hospice of the Pines.
