Douglas Preston Thurman

Born as Douglas Preston Thurman in Hugo, Oklahoma, Doug was the next to the oldest of seven children of John and Lela Thurman. Doug married his childhood sweetheart, Naomi Bennett in August 1940. Their marriage lasted for 55 years until her death in 1995.

He lived and worked in Hugo, Oklahoma, until 1939 when he moved to Mayer, Arizona. After arriving in Arizona, Dug worked as an underground hard rock miner at the Golden Turkey Mine in Cleator, Arizona. He returned to Oklahoma and married Nay. They both moved to Arizona. He was drafted prior to the end of World War II. He served his tour of duty in the Military Police stationed in the Hawaiian Islands. After the war, Doug returned home and worked at the Iron King Mine until it closed in 1969. He then went to work for the Arizona State Highway Department in 1970 and retired in 1984.

Doug was preceded in death by a brother Miller Thurman, sister Mary Ann Stennett and grandson Michael Dunham. He is survived by two daughters, Beverly Dunham and her husband Russell of Gila Bend, Linda Haddox and her husband Ralph of Albuquerque, New Mexico; one son Shelley Thurman of Chandler and his wife Cheryle; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; two brothers Ronald Thurman of Cooper, Texas, Gerald Ray of Jacksonville, Texas; two sisters, Nadine Wheeler of Cooper, Texas, and Johnny Helen Ray of Gun Barrel City, Texas.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 29, 2008, at the Paradise Funeral Home, 3934 E. Indian School Road, Phoenix, Arizona.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests all donations be sent to the D’Vintage Manor, 1614 W. Boise Place, Chandler, Arizona 85224 or Hospice of the Valley, 777 W. Southern Avenue, Suite 301, Mesa, Arizona 85210.
