Albert Heinz, 86, retired principal of Ira A. Murphy School, former Peoria City Councilman and elder in the First Presbyterian Church of Peoria, passed away December 28, 2004. Al was born and raised in Staunton, Ill.

He enlisted in the navy in 1938 and served for eight years. In 1942 he married Hazel JOHNSON. The war years were spent in New Orleans arming ships and on sea duty in the South Pacific.

Moving to Arizona, Al entered Arizona State University and received an MA Ed and an administrator's certificate. He taught 7th and 8th grades at Peoria Elementary School from 1951 to 1972. He was the first principal of Ira A. Murphy School and served there from 1972 until his retirement in 1979. His community service included two terms on the Peoria City Council.

Retirement years were spent in travel and volunteer work, building homes for Habitat and serving more than ten years as a volunteer for Volunteer Interfaith Caregiver Program. He was a lay minister for the United Methodist Church and later was an elder in the First Presbyterian Church of Peoria where he was a member for more than forty years.

Al died in the Peoria home he built for his family, and in which he lived for 51 years.

He is survived by Hazel, his wife for nearly 63 years, daughter Ruth MURPHY, sons Steven and Andrew, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at the Peoria Presbyterian Church, 10236 N. 83 Ave., Peoria, at 2:00 pm on Friday, Jan. 7.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to the church, VICAP, or Habitat for Humanity would be appreciated.
