Robert Louis Kastelic, age 55, passed away February 19, 2005 at his home in Prescott, Arizona. Bob was born July 2, 1949, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the son of Joseph (Gene) and Mary (Marcelle TAYLOR) KASTELIC-NEWMAN.

Bob attended St. Agnes Catholic School and graduated from St. Francis Jordan High School in Milwaukee. Bob moved to Arizona in 1970. He earned his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in Education from Arizona State University. He earned his Ed.D from Columbic Teachers' College in New York. Bob was twice the recipient of a Fulbright scholarship and a member of Phi Delta Kappa.

Bob retired in June, 2004 from his teaching position with the Scottsdale Unified School District. He taught American History, Government, Economics and Psychology at Saguaro and Chaparral High Schools. During his teaching career he was named Teacher of the Year numerous times by various civic organizations. Bob taught one year at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon and served as an adjunct professor at Northern Arizona University.

Bob gained international attention building covered wagons with his American History classes at Saguaro High School. The project was part of his "living history" curriculum designed with his classes between 1980-1986. The students traveled by covered wagon, 90 miles from Prescott to Scottsdale in period dress. Bob's passion for learning and education translated into his support for alternative education opportunities for all students in the form of charter schools in Arizona. He was recognized for his exemplary work as a Child Advocate for Foster Care in Arizona. His personal interests included the history of native Southwest cultures, the Arizona environmental movement and the study of Eastern philosophy. He pivoted all of this into dozens of journal articles for leading educational journals.

His keen attention to detail, dry sense of humor and astute observations on human nature shone throughout.

Bob enjoyed the outdoors, hiking and camping and for six summers served with his family as campground hosts on the White River National Forest in Aspen Colorado. As a member of Our Lady of Joy Catholic Church, in the early days of Carefree, Bob was instrumental in establishing their youth education programs.

In addition to his parents, Bob is survived by his sons Benjamin and Nathaniel KASTELIC; brothers James, Gene and John KASTELIC and sisters Margene WOIDA, Kathy SHEAHAN, and Carol Jo GREGORY. Bob also leaves behind many loving nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and dear friends. Though they have lost a beloved family member and friend, Bob's thrill for life and learning will always be an inspiration for creativity.

A memorial service, to celebrate Bob's life was held at Sharlot Hall Museum in Prescott, Arizona (415 W. Gurley, 86301).

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made in Bob's name to Sharlot Hall Museum to further their educational history programs.
