The Arizona Republic, Phoenix, Arizona July 5, 2002 Elinor H. Payne was born March 10, 1908 in Clifton, Arizona. She was the middle child of three daughters. She attended grade school in Phoenix and Washington, D.C. where her adoptive father was transferred for a specific Government job. She returned to Phoenix, completed her high school education at Phoenix Union High School, two years at Phoenix College, and concluded her college education with a degree in teaching from Arizona State University. She and her younger sister, the late Dorothy LOOMIS LONG, both taught grade school in the Scottsdale School System. In 1931 she married Alton B. PAYNE, Sr. and together they established Payne's Shoe Repair. Her husband's dedication to offering only top-quality workmanship ultimately won him the honor of the preeminent Shoe Repair Business Championship for the fourteen western states. This business evolved into Payne's Paddock, offering quality leather English and Western riding equipment, and ultimately into Payne's Select Fashions where Elinor produced and narrated fashion shows for many of the Valley's women's clubs. Elinor was active in the Phoenix Women's Club where she served in a number of offices and chairmanships. She was also active in P.T.A., Campfire Girls, Garden Club, and as a Nationally-accredited flower show judge, judging all over the state as well as in Texas and New Mexico. In 1956 she was elected as the Charter President of Soroptomist International, Northwest Chapter, and served as a delegate to the National Convention held in Atlantic City. A lover of art, music and life! Elinor was cherished by her friends for her kindness and good humor. She was a truly remarkable wife, mother, sister, friend, educator, and optimist. Her light will shine forever as the beloved wife of the late Alton B. PAYNE, Sr., and devoted and loving mother of Patricia L. HOMME, Phoenix, Arizona; Jacqueline E. PAYNE, Scottsdale, Arizona; and Alton (Toby) PAYNE, Jr., Carefree, Arizona. Ten grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren also survive her. To live in the heart is to never be forgotten. A memorial service was held at Messinger Mortuary, 7601 E. Indian School Road, Scottsdale, AZ. Donations may be made in her name to the American Cancer Society, 2929 E.
