Lela Mae Nelson passed away April 25, 2008, at the Peaceful Valley Home Care in Prescott, Ariz. She was 90 years old.

Lela was born in Waco, Texas, Aug. 4, 1917. She moved to California at a young age and there met her husband, David Ira Nelson, who was born in Kansas. They were married for 60 years until his death in January 1995.

Lela resided most of her life in El Monte and Lawndale, Calif. She was a housewife and worked alongside her husband raising 8,000 laying chickens on their property. Lela was quite a woman; she loved to square and round dance and play pinochle and bingo. Eventually the freeway bought most of their property, so the chicken ranch ended. After that, she worked long enough to receive retirement benefits at Tridair Industries in Torrance, Calif. Some years later, they moved to Lancaster, Calif., to be close to their son. Lela loved going to the First Baptist Church there and enjoyed the Murphy Circle. She was the happiest with family.

She loved watching her grandson play at the softball games, especially the pizza parties afterwards, the bowling games and vacations with the family.

Lela and her husband had many fun times with family at their relaxation home in Lake Riverside, Calif. She moved to Prescott Valley, Ariz., with her son and daughter-in-law in June of 2004, and shortly afterwards moved into assisted living closeby.

She was a very quiet and sweet person, with a twinkle in her eyes, and loved by all who knew her.

She is survived by her son, David Wesley Nelson and wife Gail; her grandchildren, Rhonda and John; great-grandchildren Kayte and Kris; and great-great grandchildren Bryant, James and Billy. Also still living is her brother, Maxwell Meadows. She came from a family of six brothers and one sister. We will miss her.

Graveside and burial services will be in Lancaster, Calif.

Arrangements entrusted to Sunrise Funeral Home. All friends and relatives are encouraged to visit www.sunrisefuneralhome.com for additional information and to sign the online guestbook.
