Dawn Owens-Cleland entered into eternal life May 9, 2008, after a courageous battle with lung cancer. She was born Nov. 20, 1957, in Phoenix, Ariz., the daughter of Donald and Beverly (Chester) Owens. Dawn was 50 years old.

Dawn graduated from Arcadia High School before attending NAU; she received her B.A. in criminal justice from ASU in 1982 and her master’s in public administration in 1993. She enjoyed a long and successful career in adult probation in both Maricopa County and the last 12 years in Yavapai County, where she was a supervisor the last two years.

Devoted to her daughter, Devon, Dawn spent her life instilling grace, confidence and a strong sense of purpose in Devon. Like all loving mothers, her concern was for her daughter and not herself. Her final moments were thoughts of Devon’s future and the plans they had made together.

Deeply proud of her Irish heritage, she loved leprechauns, Irish music and St. Patrick’s Day, and her favorite color was green. She loved all animals, especially dogs, cats and horses. Any stray anything was always welcome at Dawns house.

Surviving Dawn are those she so deeply loved: husband Rick; daughter Devon; father Don Owens; stepmother Delores; brother Steve; stepbrother David Fuller; stepsister Torri Scott; stepchildren John Cleland and Lisa Haw; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Dawn was preceded in death by her mother, Beverly, and stepmother Joann. She was a bright shining star of our lives, an elegant, caring lover of all living things. She will be missed by all of us who deeply love her.

A gathering of family and friends will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 16, 2008, at the Arizona Ruffner Wakelin Funeral Home, corner of Cortez and Carleton.

A celebration of Dawn’s life will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 17, at Prescott United Methodist Church, 505 W. Gurley Prescott, Ariz.

Private inurnment will be at St. Francis Cemetery in Phoenix.

Family suggests memorials in her name to her favorite charities – Yavapai Humane Society, 1625 Sundog Road, Prescott, AZ 86301, or Big Brothers Big Sisters, 103 E. Gurley, Prescott, AZ 86301.
