John Jacob Bechtold Jr. 1922 -2008

Born Oct. 7, 1922, to John and Jessie Bechtold Sr. in New Jersey and died May 8, 2008, in Orlando, Fla.

Survivor s include his wife Mary; brother Bill Bechtold; daughters Joy (Jim) Stringham and Gayle (Randy) Baker; grandson Derek Stringham; granddaughters Angela Stringham, Christi (Jeff) Hickman and Randi (Christopher) Murdock; and great-granddaughters Shawna and Morgan Mayo.

From a previous marriage, daughters Cathy Johnson, Jessie Bechtold and Susan Ellis; and grandchildren Johnny Johnson Jr., Jody Ellis, Danielle Halle, Joshuah Ellis and Micah Ellis.

John was a member of the Army and he and Mary spent many hours volunteering at the VA Hospital in Prescott. He was a Past Commander of American Legion Post 108, a Boy Scout Troop Leader, and a member of the Prescott Valley City Council. John was a member of the Shrine for over 50 years and, along with his wife Mary, a member of the Shrine Clown Unit. Together they participated in local parades and worked with the Clothe-a-Child program to outfit needy children for school. John and Mary co-owned Prescott Valley Optical and served many area residents. They enjoyed camping and fishing and traveling with their beloved Brittany Spaniel, Lady. John loved woodworking and many residents received gifts of his artistic endeavors.

A celebration of his life was held at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Fla. An Honor Guard performed the Flag Ceremony and played Taps as we said goodbye to John.
