Leonard J. Panek, 68, died Saturday, Feb. 15, 2003 in Zuni, New Mexico.

He was born June 26, 1934 in Maple City, Michigan. He lived in Ramah, New Mexico, and retired with honors from the US Army after 21 years of service. Serving in the Korean Conflict, Vietnam and the Berlin Uprising. He married Mary E. Grass in 1956 and they spent 49 years together.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Panek of Ramah, New Mexico; daughters, Tonya Niedheardt, Lisa Lewis all from Ramah, New Mexico, Jolene Thrasher of Glenwood and Michelle Keno of Gallup, New Mexico; brother, Lawrence Panek of Travers City, Michigan; also 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Grace Panek.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Feb. 20 at the San Lorenzo Mission in Ramah, New Mexico with Fr. Jeff George officiating. Interment will be in the Ramah Community Cemetery. Pallbearers were Michael Panek, Jason Jones, Jeff Niedheardt, Marty Keno, Elvin Lewis, Emery Grey Eagle, Derrick Niedheardt, Alex Niedheardt and Leonard Keno.
