Trinidad H. Gil

Trinidad H. Gil, a former longtime resident of Flagstaff, died suddenly Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010, in Payson.

Mr. Gil was born Aug. 29, 1925, in McGaffey, N.M., and raised in Flagstaff. He moved to Yuma in his 30s, where he remained until 2002. After the 2002 death of his beloved wife Lupe A. Gil in Payson, he continued to live with his daughter and son-in-law in Payson.

In 1942, at the age of 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He fought valiantly in Iwo Jima, the battle for Saipan and many other battles during the Asiatic Pacific Campaigns. He was awarded a Triple Bronze Star Veteran and other campaign ribbons and medals.

He returned to Flagstaff and became very active in the Labor's Construction Union. While working in Flagstaff, in July 1954, he met the love of his life Lupe A. Gil and married her three months later. In 1958, they moved to Yuma and raised their three children.

Mr. Gil is survived by his son Joseph Ray Gil (Lisa) of Gallitzin, Pa.; daughters Theresa Gil of Michigan and Luann Gil Carpino (John) of Payson; sisters Lupe Anaya of Flagstaff and Dolores Espinoza (Oscar) of Mesa; mother-in-law Lucy Amavisca of Yuma; sister-in-law Rachel Crawford of Yuma; brothers-in-law George Amavisca (Alicia) of Yuma, and Robert Amavisca (Lucy); eight grandchildren; and one great -grandson.

He was preceded in death by his wife Lupe A. Gil; parents Jesus and Ignacia Gil; brothers Ramon and John; several infant brothers and sisters; and an infant granddaughter.

Wake and Catholic rites were at his memorial services Monday, at the Payson Messinger Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be today, at 11 a.m., at St. Philip the Apostle Church, 511 S. St. Philip's St., with reception immediately following at the church parish hall. Interment will be Thursday, at 11 a.m., at Desert Lawn Memorial Park in Yuma.

Officiating Catholic rites and Mass is Father William L. Gyure. Arrangements entrusted to Messinger Payson Funeral Home and Johnson Mortuary Desert Lawn of Yuma.
