Wickenburg Sun, Wickenburg, Arizona March 9, 1962 Mrs. Alton Powell funeral Thursday Funeral services for Mrs. ALTON POWELL of Aguila were scheduled to be held at 2 p.m. Thursday of this week in the Wickenburg Chapel with Rev. Dean McMann minister, officiating. Burial was to be in the Aguila Cemetery. Mrs. Powell, member of a family prominent in the state for many years, died in Portland, Ore., Friday of last week following heart surgery. She had been in ill health for the past six years. Born August 21, 1904, in the state of Sonora, Mexico, she was said to be the first Caucasian child born in that state. She came to Arizona when she was 3 years old and, except for brief periods in California and Oregon where she taught school, had lived in this state all her life. She also taught school in Aguila, where she had lived since 1924, and in Paradise Valley. Surviving are the husband, Alton Powell; one son Leon Powell; and two grandchildren, all of Aguila; and the mother Mrs. Maggie Atkins of Phoenix. She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge and of the Aguila Women’s Club. See Also: Find a Grave |
