George D. Prince, age 79, of Menifee, Calif., born June 23, 1926, died Friday, Sept. 9, 2005, in Prescott.

Born in Cottonwood, his parents George W. and Nellie (Marshall) Prince brought him to Prescott as a small child. He attended Prescott schools until his father died his junior year and his mother moved the family to Phoenix. Feeling that he belonged to the Prescott class of '44, he returned this year to attend the reunion activities of last week, and to visit old schoolmates. George died from a heart attack after visiting the Granite Gate retirement home early Friday afternoon, crashing his truck into some rocks at the Dells.

George enlisted into the army late in 1944 and having served just over a year, was discharged at the end of WWII. He met his wife, Mavis Solem, after she was assigned as a nurse at the Whipple VA hospital in 1946. Later that year, he enrolled at the U of A, Tucson. They married in June of 1947 and enjoyed 58 years together until his death.

George finished his education at Cal Aero Tech in Glendale, Calif. He worked for Hughes Aircraft for two years, then for Fluor Corporation for 35 years. His work as a petroleum design engineer required international travel and he received recognition for much of his work.

Since his retirement, he has greatly enjoyed golfing, many trips in their RV (his favorite trip was to Alaska), and volunteering at an elementary school tutoring young students with their reading. He loved fishing with his three grandsons, James, Jon II, and Jeffrey.

He is predeceased by his parents and by a younger brother, John E. Prince. Survivors, besides his wife, Mavis of Menifee, Calif.; a son, Jon D. Prince of Murrieta, Calif.; a sister, Mary Adermann of Phoenix; and two brothers, David and Roger, both of Denver, Colo.

Arrangements are pending in California.
