Richard Charlie, who would have been 17 years old Monday of this week, died in a 2-vehicle, head-on crash Sunday evening one mile west of the Municipal Airport on Highway 60.

Also killed in the collision was the driver of the other vehicle, Donald E. Olmstead, ager 56, of Prescott. His wife Kathleen, 49, was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix with injuries described by Highway Patrolman H.L. Gatlin, the investigating officer as serious but not critical; probably a broken shoulder and arm.

Officer Gatlin said his investigation showed that the eastbound 1967 Ford sedan driven by the Wickenburg youth apparently crossed the center line and met head-on the 1962 Chevrolet pickup truck in which the Olmsteads were riding.

Both victims were dead at the Scene, Gatlin said. Considerable difficulty was experienced in removing the two men from the wreckage of their vehicles. Patrol Sergeant Dave Holton and Patrolman Bill Reuter came to Gatlin’s assistance.

There was no fire at the scene but because of the danger of spilled gasoline two fire trucks from town arrived and washed down the pavement. Deputy Sheriffs Bill Newton, Ray Hoffman and Ralph Butler directed traffic around the crash.

Officer Gatlin gave the time of the accident as 5:50.

Richard, who would have been a senior at Wickenburg High School this fall, was the son of Mr. & Mrs. Richard Charlie, Sr., long-time residents of Wickenburg. The senior Mr. Charlie has been a member of the Santa Fe section crew for many years.

Richard was an all-around athlete, popular with his teammates and fellow students. He was center on the varsity squad last year and was counted on to hold down that position this fall.

Funeral services were to be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Wickenburg Funeral Home with Bishop Clark Ashby of the LDS church in charge. Burial was to be in the Wickenburg Cemetery.

In additional to his parents, Richard is survived by three sisters, Marjorie, of Denver, Colo., Janice and Gail at home, and one brother, Wilfred, also at home. His maternal grandparents also survive.
