Anna Frances (Silva) Duarte

Anna Frances Duarte, 93, passed away April 24, 2003. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joaquim, in 1977 and is survived by her son Joaquim Jr. and her niece Jacqueline May Catherine Souza Henzie and her family in Aptos California, as well as many cousins in Los Banos, CA.

She was born on May 2, 1909, in Newport, Rhode Island. Her mother, Maria Rita Zorra Silva and her father, Manuel Valeriano Silva, a whaler, were natives of the island of Faial in the Azores (Portugal). She and her family moved to California when she was 3 years old where she attended schools in Stevenson and Los Banos.

She married Joaquim Duarte in 1924 and they lived in Los Banos for 50 years engaged in the dairy business. In 1974 they moved to Glendale, AZ, to be near their only son, Joaquim Duarte, Jr., a professor at Thunderbird - The American Graduate School of International Management.

In Los Banos, Anna was a strong supporter of the Portuguese Holy Ghost (Divino Espirito Santo) Society and the Our Lady of Fatima Society. In Glendale she supported Thunderbird's Saints Joachim and Ann Newman Club and its campus masses, Andre House for the homeless in Phoenix, and the graduate school.

Donations in her memory may he made to the Ss. Joachim and Ann Newman Club, Thunderbird - AGSIM, 15249 N. 59th Ave. Glendale, Az 85306. Visita tion 6-8 PM Tues., April 29, 2003 at Chapel of the Chimes Mortuary 7924 N. 59th Ave. Glendale.

Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM Wed. April 30, 2003 at St. Raphael Catholic Church 5525 W. Acoma Rd, Glendale.

Interment to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.
