Isabel Walter, 92, died June 6, 2008, at Prescott Samaritan Village.

She was born near Sherwood, N.D., where her parents, Walter and Cleona Trout, operated a large farm. Her father served in the North Dakota State Senate. In 1938 Isabel married Kenneth Hayden in Minot.

Isabel first studied nursing at Trinity School of Nursing in Minot before moving to Portland, Ore. She worked there as a nurse in the naval ship-building yard during WWII.

In 1948 Isabel moved to Arizona, living first in Yuma and later in Phoenix and Prescott. While living in Phoenix she was determined to complete her nursing education and, at age 50, she fulfilled all college course requirements to become a registered nurse.

Prescott was Isabel’s “true” home. She lived there over 35 years and oftentimes proclaimed it as the best place to live. She worked as a nurse at Yavapai Regional Medical Center , the Pioneers’ Home and Prescott Samaritan Village.

After retirement Isabel enjoyed the pleasures and adventures of travel to far-distant lands – baptism in the River Jordan, two European tours, a photo-safari to Africa and a cruise to Southeast Asia capitals.

Isabel was a longtime member and supporter of First Congregational Church. She actively volunteered at the Nutrition Center and Chamber of Commerce. She established a reputation as a “champion” speller and was an avid crossword puzzle addict, who pursued this hobby until macular degeneration prevented it.

Survivors include her son Terrence Hayden (Karin) of Anchorage, Alaska; granddaughter Rina Joy Bird (Wayne) of Loveland, Colo.; and great grandchildren Hannah-Joy, Harmony, Seth, Cherish and Luke.

She is also survived by sisters Zora Selliken of Torrance, Calif., Vida Trout of Portland, Ore.; and brother Aaron Trout of Mohall, N.D.; plus several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Isabel’s life will be Saturday, June 14, 2008, at Heritage Memory Mortuary, 131 Grove Ave., Prescott.

Visitation is 2 p.m. with a 3 p.m. service. Graveside will follow at Heritage Memorial Park in Dewey.

Heritage Memory Mortuary assisted the family with arrangements.
