Charlotte Elizabeth McKay passed away peacefully on Sept. 18 at the Arizona Pioneers Home.

She was surrounded by the love of family, friends and the staff of the Home who cared for her the past three years. Charlotte was born on June 16, 1919, in Ray, Ariz, and moved to Prescott a year later.

After graduating from Prescott High School in 1938, she moved to Phoenix where she graduated from the Academy of Beauty Culture. Her career as a hair stylist began in Kingman.

During WWII she worked at Norma Rae's Beauty Salon, later called Andres, on N. Montezuma Street. She worked and managed there until she moved to Phoenix. She returned to Prescott in the early 1960s and worked, first for Frontier Hairdressers, then leased and managed the House of Beauty until she opened her own shop in her S. Marina Home. She retired after 60 years in her profession.

Until this September, Charlotte kept up with the High School Alumni Half-Century Club.

While never a member of the church, Charlotte's father was the unofficial sexton for St. Luke's. Because the family lived across the street when the church was on Marina Street, Fraser McKay would open the church for services, unlocking doors and getting the heat going.

For almost 20 years, Charlotte organized the pie service at the St. Luke's annual "Don't Spend Christmas Alone" dinner.

During the church's 1992 Centennial Celebration, Charlotte, as one of three principal co-chairs, helped to coordinate all the social activities.

Her best brownie recipe was an often-requested item at church potlucks, as was her well-loved Kahlua chocolate cake.

As the most long-standing member of the Parish, Charlotte spoke during the Mardi Gras event kicking off the church's mortgage retirement campaign. Dressed in her Mardi Gras best complete with a brightly colored feather boa, Charlotte spoke of her many memories and encouraged others to give generously.

Short of stature with a quiet voice, after waiting for the microphone and sound system to be adjusted at that dinner, she demonstrated her well-known sense of humor by beginning her talk with, "Can you hear me now?"

Perhaps most new parishioners will remember Charlotte introducing herself to visitors and welcoming newcomers to the church setting.

Charlotte is survived by her sister-in-law, Marge McKay of Wickenburg, three cousins, seven nieces. three nephews, several great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews.

There will be two services. A memorial service will be held at the Arizona Pioneers Home, Friday, Sept. 23, at 10 a.m.

A funeral service, in celebration of Charlotte's life, will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 24, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 2000 Shepherd's Ln., just north of the airport on Hwy 89.

Interment will be at 10 a.m., Monday Sept. 26, at Mt. View Cemetery on Willow Creek Road, Prescott.

Contributions may be made to the Charlotte McKay Memorial Fund at St. Luke's Church.

The Hampton Funeral Home was entrusted with the arrangements.
