Hedwig (Hedy) M. (nee Schmidheiny) Cox, age 82, died Tuesday, March 30th, in Phoenix. She was born on April 10, 1921, in Switzerland.

She worked on a farm and helped care for guard dogs during WWII. After the war, she completed nurse's training at the University of Basel and fulfilled a childhood dream, inspired by her beloved Zane Gray, by emigrating to the West. For 10 years, she worked as a much-loved nurse at Ganado Presbyterian Hospital, where she mastered her sixth language, Navajo, and delivered many babies.

In 1959, she moved to Prescott and soon fulfilled her second dream by marrying a cowboy. While she kept nursing in Williams and Prescott over the next two decades, she also fulfilled the, role of "ranch wife," in Ash Fork and Chino Valley. Many times over the years, she was called put to tend to a sick or injured animal or person. In addition, she was an accomplished horsewoman, musician, and artist; many of her paintings grace the walls of homes across the country. She loved Mozart, Beethoven, and horses.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Cox. She is survived by her daughter, Sylvia Cox of Laveen, Ariz.; her step-son, Clifford Cox of Chino Valley;, and numerous nieces and nephews in Switzerland.

Please make any memorial contributions to Hospice of Arizona, 2222 W. Northern Ave., Ste A-100, Phoenix, AZ, 85021, or to your local humane shelter.

A memorial will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, April 5, at Arizona Ruffner Wakelin Funeral Home, 303 S. Cortez St., in Prescott.
