Daily Courier, Prescott, Arizona Tuesday, April 6, 2004 Martha (Washington) Anderson, age 91, of Phoenix, passed away on April 3, 2004. Martha was born in Ash Fork, Ariz., on March 27, 1913, to William Douglas and Mabelle (Foley) Washington. She was a collateral descendent of President George Washington, a current member of First Families, of Arizona, and a devoted parishioner of St. Francis Xavier where she had managed the Marian Gift Shop for many years. She was a graduate of St. Joseph's Academy, in Prescott, and received her BA in education from Arizona State Teachers' College (NAU), in Flagstaff. Martha did post-graduate work in music at UCLA and at Western Reserve in Cleveland, Ohio. She taught in the Seligman schools, and later moved to Prescott where she taught at Washington and Lincoln Schools. She married Novian Anderson in August of 1941, in Williams, Ariz. They lived and raised their family, in Prescott and were active members of Sacred Heart Parish, where Martha taught at Sacred Heart grammar school. After moving to Tempe in 1962. she taught at Mount Carmel grammar school, and following their move to Phoenix, taught at St. Francis Xavier grammar school. She was active in the Brophy Moms' Club and was involved in many organizations at the church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Novian, who passed away in Nov. of 2000 and sister, Mary (Washington) Kalafat who passed away in Nov. of 1984. She is survived by her sister, Charlotte (Washington) Wheeler and brother-in-law, Sam of Winslow; her daughter, Mary Carzoli (Bob) of Schaumburg, Ill.; her sons, Michael Anderson (Sandra) of Tempe, George (Mimi) Anderson of Wood Dale, Ill, Joseph Anderson (Mary) of Phoenix; her 16 grandchildren, Bob and Joe Carzoli, Jennifer (Anderson) Zwolak, Wendy Anderson, Robin (Anderson) Wright, Debbie (Anderson) Matwijkow, Jacob, Monica, Annie, Cassidy, Kalissa, Camela, Chad, Dustin, Morgan and Casey Anderson. She is also survived by her nine great grandchildren, Bobby, Samantha, Alanna, Jenna, Anjelina, James, Rebecca, Juliette, and Josiah, and many nieces and nephews. Martha was devoted to her church, children, family, and many friends. She attended daily Mass at St. Francis and also loved to bake and spend time with her children and grandchildren. She left a lasting legacy of love, spiritual guidance and caring ways to her children, family and all who knew Her. She will be dearly missed. Visitation will be held Tuesday, April 6, from 6 to 8 p.m., with a 7 p.m. Rosary at Whitney & Murphy Arcadia Funeral Home, 4800 East Indian School Road, in Phoenix. Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, April 7, at 2 p.m., at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 4715 North Central Avenue, in Phoenix. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Francis Xavier Elementary School Music Program, 4715 North Central Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85012.
