Marie Taylor Mills, 95, of Prescott, Ariz., born Oct. 19, 1909, in Denver, Colo., died Sunday, March 13, 2005, in Prescott.

Burial will be at the Pomona Valley Memorial Park Cemetery in Pomona, California.

Marie Taylor Mills died March 12, 2005, at the Prescott Samaritan Village. She was born Oct. 19, 1909, in Denver, Colo.

Marie graduated from Pomona College in Pomona, Calif., Magna Cum Laude with a BS in Psychology and Philosophy. She attained her MA degree from Claremont Graduate School and additional graduate work at the University of Wisconsin, University of Southern California and the University of California. She started her teaching career at Covina High School as Director of Testing and Guidance.

In 1946, she became Dean of Women at Mt. San Antonio College, Walnut, Calif., and eventually became President and District Superintendent of said college until retirement in 1972. During her tenure as President, the college constructed a new facility and named it the Marie T. Mills Aquatic Center. Upon retirement she and her husband, J. Leland Mills, moved to Prescott.

In Prescott, Marie became very active in community affairs. She served on the Yavapai Community Hospital Board, Yavapai Guidance Clinic, Yavapai College and other civic and social organizations. She was a member of the Soroptimist and PEO organizations. Her greatest achievement, along with three other Prescott women, was raising the funds to ensure that the Prescott Samaritan Village and Nursing Home would be built at its present location. As an avid gardener, she was best known for her rose gardens.

Marie was preceded in death by her husband, James Leland Mills.

Relatives include one niece, two nephews, several grandnephews and nieces and many great-grandnephews and nieces.

Funeral services will be held today, Wednesday, March 16, at 4 p.m., at the Hampton Funeral Home, 240 South Cortez Street.

Burial will be in the Pomona Valley Memorial Park Cemetery in Pomona, Calif.

The Hampton Funeral Home was entrusted with the arrangements.
