George S. (Van) VanLandingham

George S. VanLandingham, 57, a 10-month resident of Sierra Vista and former Eagar, died Tuesday, Nov. 9 at University Medical Center in Tucson. He had been awaiting a heart transplant.

George, or "Van" as his friends and family called him, was born Jan. 26, 1947 in Rocky Mount, North Carolina to George T. and Dorothy VanLandingham. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Van worked 15 years for Brown and Root as the head safety engineer, a job that took him and his family from Virginia to Mississippi then to Eagar, where he continued to live for 23 years. He enjoyed music, especially playing the drums.

Van was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Joppa Shrine Temple, The American Legion Post No. 30, and a life member of VFW Post No. 8987, where he served as the commander from 2002-2003. He was a great dad and taught his children the goodness of giving, and has a soft spot for those in need, especially children.

Van is survived by his mother Dorothy VanLandingham of Virginia Beach, Virginia; his wife and the love of his life Rebecca VanLandingham; daughters Kelly (John) George of Sierra Vista, and Jaimie Sossaman of Tempe. the ones that kept him going, his grand-babies, Marissa and Katie George and TyLynn Sossaman; siblings, Bruce (Chris) VanLandingham of Verona, New York, Nancy (Edward) Eure of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Renee Kight of Virginia Beach, Virginia; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and hundreds of friends who loved him.

Van was preceded in death by his father, George T. VanLandingham.

A time of visitation will be held Thursday, Nov. 18 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at Hatfield Memorial Chapel, 830 S. Hwy 92, with funeral services Friday, Nov. 19 at noon at Hatfield Memorial Chapel.

Interment will follow at Southern Arizona Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1300 Buffalo Soldier Tr.

The family would like to stress the importance of organ donation, so in lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in Van's memory to the New Heart Society, P.O. Box 36122, Phoenix, AZ 85067.

Arrangements are by Hatfield Funeral Home, 458-5120.
