Alfred Chartz Nichols, 89, of Williams, Ariz., passed away on Feb. 5, 2005. An Arizona pioneer descendant, he was born in Tempe, Ariz., the second eldest of five children. After graduating from Brophy Preparatory High School, he joined the Merchant Marines prior to enlisting in the Navy during WWII. Following the war, he was a long-time cattle rancher in Peeples Valley.

Alfred married Ruth C. Nichols in Sand Point, Idaho. They raised six children. Later, he owned and operated a 55-acre flagstone quarry in Ash Fork, Ariz., for over 50 years.

Survivors include his children, Rosemary Nichols, Elida Proper, Anne (James Rawls) Nichols, Bonnie (Allen) Ervine and Ralph (Karen) Nichols; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and sister, Sister Mary Norine Nichols, OSF. He was preceded in death by his son, Timothy Nichols.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 27, at the Williams Senior Center, 850 W. Grant, Williams, Ariz. (86046). In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Senior Center.
