Mildred Evelyn Ryan, age 81, of Prescott, was killed instantly in a traffic collision on Feb. 28, 2005.

Millie is survived by her three children, Carol Anita of Sacramento, Calif., Bruce Augustus of Bellevue, Wash., Thomas Aquinas of Seattle, Wash.; her husband of 58 years, Ted; her brothers, Charles Holloway of Oregon and Jerre Holloway of Missouri; her daughters-in-law, Susan and Cathy and last but not least, her three precious grandsons, Nic, David, and James.

Born in Glasgow, Mo., of long standing farming families, Millie very early exhibited her quest for perfection in everything she chose to do. She was the winner of 4H prizes, the MVP of her high school basketball team which achieved a state championship, and she received a scholarship to a business college in Kansas City. At an early age, she boldly moved to San Diego, where she contributed to the war effort at Consolidated Vultee Aircraft.

After WWII, she was employed by The Kelco Company in San Diego as secretary to the chief officer of the company. It was there that she met her future husband, Ted. Soon after her marriage the family moved to suburban Washington, D.C. where she became known for her hospitality, her bridge playing expertise, as well as her prize winning baking.

Early in her marriage her mother-in-law, gave her a set of golf clubs. She took on this new challenge with customary zeal and soon became a very proficient golfer. Years later, while the family was living in Bellevue, Wash., she won the Bellevue Ladies Golf Club Championship two years running.

Millie's life as a stay-at-home mom was often challenging. Ted?s work as an Oceanographer required frequent stints at sea, and nearest relatives were thousands of miles away. After Ted?s retirement, they enjoyed traveling in China, New Zealand, Europe, the U.K., Mexico, South America, as well as traveling with a trailer throughout the U.S.A. She has always been known for her superior driving skill.

After moving to Mesa, in an effort to help her husband?s weak tennis game, she took up that sport; and within months she had accumulated numerous trophies in mixed and ladies doubles tournaments.

In lieu of services, the family wishes to support Prescott Tennis.

There will be a Trust Fund, in Millie's name, for just this purpose.

Arrangements by Arizona Ruffner Wakelin Funeral Home.
