Margaret Ann Mackey, a gentle and loving wife, mother, and grandmother, left her Prescott home peacefully, Sunday morning, March 6th, to return to the Lord. She was 87.

Certain of love established by her savior Jesus Christ, Margaret spent every day reflecting Christ's grace and love to family, friends, and those lucky to have met her. Bereaved family takes comfort in knowing that Margaret is finally rejoicing in God's presence, and that there is another voice in Heaven's choir.

Born Sept. 2, 1917, in Winnsboro, La., to Ernest and Nita Jamieson Cassels, Margaret spent most of her youth growing up in Mississippi. Her father, a minister, passed away when she was young, leaving her mother to raise her along with three brothers, Fielding Cassels, Jennings Cassels and Maurice Cassels. Her mother, a seamstress, proudly put her and her brothers through school.

Graduating from Weaks High School in Woodville, Miss., Margaret went on to attend Mississippi Woman?s College in Hattiesburg, Miss., which is now known as William Carey College. The college was founded by its current namesake in 1906 and is run by the Mississippi Baptist Convention. On May 13, 1938, Margaret graduated with a teaching degree. She served as the Class Reporter for her graduating class. Margaret received her teaching license on Aug. 29, 1938, and began working in public schools in Mississippi.

Later, along with her mother, Nita, and brother, Maurice, Margaret moved to Phoenix, where she worked as a secretary in the First National Bank Trust Department. It was in Phoenix that Margaret met and later married her devoted husband, Ira Mackey. They wed on Nov. 23, 1955, at Central Heights Baptist Church in Phoenix. Their matron of honor was Betty Reeve, Ira's sister. Wally Reeve served as the best man. The couple honeymooned in Prescott, which was later to become their home, as well as the home of their son, David L. Mackey.

Margaret continued her life of service to Christ by working for years as the church secretary for Mission Drive Baptist Church in Phoenix. Building a home filled with love while Ira worked as an airplane mechanic. Margaret shared her faith with the youth and adults of her church every week as a Sunday school teacher. Members of Mission Drive Baptist Church remember Margaret's loving and gentle devotion to Christ. She was a faithful and active member of Mission Drive until she moved from Phoenix to Prescott with her husband in June 2002.

Constantly praying and reading the scriptures, Margaret prepared for Heaven her entire life. Family members said Margaret let her actions speak volumes about her faith. Never one to loudly or forcefully evangelize, Margaret would sweetly ask family and friends, "Are you reading your Bible? and Have you prayed about it."

In the later years of her life, Margaret delighted in the blessings God had bestowed on her family: her son, David, became a successful attorney and Arizona Superior Court Judge who continues to raise a beautiful and loving family in Prescott.

With the memory of Margaret, her family said that the gentle kindness and eternal love she possessed would live on in the family for generations to come.

Margaret is survived by her husband, Ira; son, David, and his wife, Peggy, and their three children, Aaron, Whitney and Will; and her niece, Debra Bokich and her husband, Chad, and daughter, Sarah. She also is fondly remembered by her nieces, Carol-Ann and Margaret, and nephew, Paul.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Ernest and Nita Jamieson Cassels, as well as her three brothers, Fielding, Jennings and Maurice.

Visitation will take place Friday, March 11th, from 5 to 6 p.m., at Hampton Funeral Home, 240 South Cortez, in Prescott, Ariz., (928) 778-4400.

Family and friends will remember Margaret Saturday, March 12th, at 11 a.m., at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 630 Park Avenue. Pastor Mark Tilly will officiate.

Instead of flowers, Margaret's family asks that memorial contributions be sent to the Sunup Rotary Foundation, P.O. Box 2033, Prescott, Ariz., 86302.

Hampton Funeral Home was entrusted with arrangements.
