Cynthia Sue Bell Thompson Grassi was born on March 25, 1955, in Des Moines, Iowa. The family moved around a variety of places before settling in Springfield, Mo., in 1969. She participated in track and cheer-leading at Logan-Rogersville High School and graduated in 1973. Cindy ran track for SMSU while getting her teaching degree and then later completed her masters in Phys. Ed at Drury. Cindy was inducted into the SMSU Women’s Athletic Hall of Fame for track in 1993.

Cindy taught elementary PE at Logan-Rogersville for 24 years while also helping with special education kids … something very dear to her heart. During her years in Rogersville, she was also known as “Coach Thompson” as she coached high school track teams for many years. Cindy later moved to St. Louis where she retired after teaching at Mark Twain Elementary for seven years. She may have retired from elementary, but she continued teaching college level at UMSL.

Cindy was a big sports fan – rarely missing a St. Louis Cardinals or Rams game. She and friend, Sandy Wacker, made an annual trip to see a Cardinals game out of town. This year they chose Philadelphia. After the game Thursday evening, the two went jogging and were struck by a car. The injuries placed Cindy in critical condition and resulted in her death on Saturday evening.

Cindy was survived by her loved ones including husband, Butch Grassi; parents, Bob Bell (Sharon) and Marilyn Tinsley (Wayne); two sons, Ryan Thompson (Heather) and Brett Thompson (Cindy); two grandchildren; sister; brother; and many friends, colleagues and extended family who love her dearly.

A life memorial service will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, July 19, 2008, in the Rogersville High School common area. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to either the Gift of Life Donor Program or the Scholarship fund set-up in honor of Cindy Thompson Grassi. People can bring donations to the school during the memorial or mail donations to Gift of Life Donor Program, 401 N. 3rd St., Philadelphia, PA 19123 in memory of Cindy Thompson Grassi or to Logan-Rogersville school central office, 100 E. Front St., Rogersville, MO 65742, Attn: Cindy Thompson Grassi Scholarship Fund.
