Donald J. Schrickel 1922- 2003. Donald J. Schrickel, 81, of Phoenix, AZ, passed away on December 15, 2003. Don was born in New Franken, WI on January 24, 1922. He was married to his wife, Carol (Selissen), for 51 years prior to her death in 1997. He is survived by his daughter, Susan Mann (Jay Mann) and grandchildren Sarah and Jeffrey Mann of Phoenix, son Thomas (Patricia Krapf) of Chicago, IL and son William (Pamela Hill Nettleton) and grandchildren Gretchen and Christopher Nettleton and Ian Anderson of Minneapolis, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Blanche (Morrison), brothers Robert and Richard and sisters Mae (Laundrie) and Gladys (Leanna). Don enlisted in the Army in 1942. Upon graduating Officer Candidate School, he served in England, France and Germany until his discharge in 1946. He regarded his time in the military as one of the most influential periods of his life, and remained immensely proud of the U.S. military and his own service. He was eternally grateful for his ability to obtain a college education as a result of the G.I. Bill. He married Carol on June 1, 1946 and enrolled at St. Norbert College in De Pere, WI, ultimately earning a degree in agronomy from the University of Wisconsin in 1950. He often said that the years he and Carol spent in Madison at the University of Wisconsin were the happiest years of their lives. Following his graduation, he was hired by the Quaker Oats Company, for which he worked 35 years, holding positions in Cedar Rapids, IA, Sioux City, IA, Fort Dodge IA, and Chicago, IL. He retired from the company in 1985 as Director of Grain Research and Development. Don and Carol moved to Phoenix in 1986. He continued to work as a consultant for both Quaker and Con Agra, devoted considerable time to his grandchildren, and traveled extensively with his family. He published his autobiography, "A Country Boy Grows Up", in 2001. The following year he completed his second book, "If You Are Thinking of Retiring - Don't!". He was active as a board member of the Kino Institute, a volunteer instructor and sponsor in the RCIA programs of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, and a part-time chaplain's assistant at Phoenix's Sky Harbor Airport. He also studied religion, philosophy and history in courses taken at Paradise Valley Community College, and he was an active member of the fitness center there. His unending devotion to the Green Bay Packers was legendary among friends and family. A memorial mass will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, December 31, 2003 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 11001 N. 40th Street, Phoenix, AZ 85028. A memorial service and interment will be held in Green Bay, WI at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a memorial contribution to the American Cancer Society, 1100 Pennsylvania Ave., Kansas City, MO, 64105 (phone 800/ACS-2345).
