The Wickenburg Sun, Wickenburg, AZ November 23, 1978, p. 1 Seven Die In Traffic In Three Days Here Seven persons died in traffic, on highways near Wickenburg from last Saturday through Monday this week. Four of the deaths resulted from a violent crash about four miles north of Wickenburg on U. S. 89 Saturday evening. James Earl Vance, 35, and his wife, Raven Marie Vance, of Lennox, Calif., were killed their pickup truck when it struck a car, occupied by Louis E. Huff, 64, and his wife Lois Roberta Albrecht, 57, Lincoln, Nebr., who also were killed. The Vances were pinned in their overturned vehicle. Volunteer fireman and additional volunteer ambulance attendants were called to the scene and worked with Highway Patrolmen and passers-by attempting to pry open the wreckage of the truck to rescue them. Huff was dead at the scene, crushed behind his steering wheel, and his wife died later after being taken to Boswell Hospital. James Edward Colburn, 41, and his wife, 37, of Phoenix, in a car behind the Huff vehicle, also were injured. Mrs. Colburn was hospitalized at Boswell and her husband released following treatment. Harold Malcom Smith, 78, of Yarnell, died in Boswell Hospital after he was injured here Saturday afternoon. Patrolman said he crashed into a sign pole at the Shepherd Brothers gas station east of town after possibly falling asleep. On Sunday afternoon, Francis Taylor, 65 of Country Club Park, died after his car jumped a guard rail on U. S. 60 about a mile west of Morristown and rolled down a steep embankment. Officers said he may have fallen asleep or become ill before the crash. On Monday morning, Joseph A. Troha, 64, of Phoenix, died about 12 miles north of Wickenburg on State Route 92. Three other persons in his vehicle said he collapsed at the wheel, the car ran off the road about 100 years and stopped after crashing through a right-of-way cattle fence and striking a small tree. The other occupants were unhurt.
