Edward Gene Capps

Edward Gene Capps Sr.

Edward G. Capps Sr., 72 years old, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2004, at Yavapai Regional Medical Center, in Prescott. He was born the eldest son of Freddie and Loree Capps in Idabel, Okla., on Dec. 1, 1931.

His family moved to Arizona in 1945. He graduated from Phoenix Union High School in 1949 and immediately joined the United States Army, where he served with the Army Aviation Engineers. During his service in the Army, he built airstrips in England. He was discharged with the rank of Master Sergeant in 1953.

Shortly after his discharge from the Army, Gene met his wife, Doris in Phoenix. They were married in July of that year and were married for 51 years.

After his discharge from the Army, he began a thirty-three year career with the United States Postal Service. During his time with the Post Office, he served as a letter carrier, supervisor, and ended his career serving as a postmaster in Winslow, where he retired in 1986.

Gene is survived by his wife, Doris and two children, Lori Cook and her husband, Dennis and Paul Capps and his wife, Kim. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Rhett Currie, Wendy Spencer, Jenny Winter, Augie Clarkson, Adam Clarkson, Milo Capps and Erica Capps; seven great grandchildren; and two brothers, Troy Lee Capps and Freddie Capps Jr.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Kenneth, and a son, Edward Gene Capps Jr.

Visitation will be held Saturday, Nov. 13, 2004, from 9 to 11 a.m., at Willow Hills First Southern Baptist Church, 1071 Mogollon Road in Prescott, with Funeral Services at 11 a.m., at the church.

Services entrusted to Heritage Memory Mortuary, Prescott, Arizona.
