Henry Lovell Brooks, 93, of Prescott, Ariz., died Jan. 4, 2006 at the Northern Arizona VA Medical Center, Prescott.

Henry was born Feb. 10, 1912, in Chippewa Falls, Wisc., to Walter H. and Edith A. (Bates) Brooks.

Henry's life entailed many struggles and tribulations; however, he was able to rise above his adversities and turn them into abounding opportunities. Through pure determination, Henry earned a bachelor of arts degree in Latin, a bachelor of science degree in zoology, and a master's degree in music at the Union Theological Seminary School of Sacred Music.

While in New York City, Henry served as the organist and choir master for St. Luke's Episcopal Church. At age 27, he played an organ recital at Carnegie Hall, preceding a public lecture by U.S. Sen. Hamilton Fish.

Henry was drafted into the United States Army during World War II. He was stationed in England and Belgium and served as the chaplain's assistant at the Battle of the Bulge.

After his honorable discharge from military service, Henry taught in the Kodiak School System near Anchorage, Alaska, and served as the organist and choir master at the First Presbyterian Church. Hjenry also taught Latin at Western Michigan University, and even composed an anthem for the university.

In 1956, Henry settled in Prescott and taught Latin, French and German at the Orme School. When he retired from teaching, Henry served as the organist for the First Congregational Church in Prescott for 21 years.

Due to Henry's generosity of spirit, the Chapel of the Valley is now home to eight biblical stained glass windows. Henry helped to build the chapel, where color and light mingle to create the magic of wisdom, the moment of inspiration, and a place of peace.

Survivors include his sister, Sarah Jane Brooks Vandergon, of Bella Vista, Ark.; four nephews and one cousin.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Henry Brooks will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 22, 2006, at the Chapel of the Valley, 2215 Fifth St., Prescott Valley.

Hampton Funeral Home assisted the family with the funeral arrangements.
