The White Mountain Independent, Show Low, Arizona ~ 05/16/2006 Vernoma May Brannon, 77, of Quemado, N.M. died suddenly at the RTA Hospice and Palliative Care Center in Lakeside, May 6, 2006. Due to poor health, Vernoma was in the process of moving to Eagar with her daughter. She was born Sept. 17, 1928 in Paris, Arkansas. While still very young, her parents moved to Elk City, Okla. where she attended school and graduated. She married Tom Brannon upon graduation from high school. They moved to Omega, New Mexico shortly after their marriage. They built a home and raised a family of five children there. She enjoyed her garden and flowers and looked forward to planting something every summer, even after her health failed and she could not do it alone. She loved to crochet and was always crocheting some little something to give away as a gift. The Brannons subcontracted to the United States Postal Service to drive the mail from Quemado to Fence Lake for several years. Vernoma eventually took over the running of the Allison Café where she supported her family for almost 10 years. After giving up the café, she took over the mail courier contract and she and her husband drove the mail until they retired in 2000 when their health forced them to give it up. Her survivors are her children, Eulene (Archie) Watkins, Eagar; Nova Deane Cornett (Harry Hall), Milan, N.M.; Tom, Jr. (Carol) Brannon, Quemado, N.M.; Jo Draegert, Springerville; and Don Wayne Brannon, Farmington, N.M.; brother, Nova (Ethel) Hedrick, Berwick, La.; and sisters, Priscilla Henthorne, Stroud, Olka.; and Reba (John) Lamp, Fayetteville, Ark.; 13 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and countless friends. Preceding her in death was her husband, Tom Brannon; her parents, Elmo and Tabitha Hedrick; and two brothers, Buford Taylor and Cyril Hedrick. A celebration of her life was held Saturday, May 13 at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Quemado, N.M. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in her name to First Baptist Church, Quemado, or a charity of your choice. Burnham Mortuary, Eagar, handled the arrangements |
