Martin G. Johnson

Martin G. Johnson Sr., 82, of Springville, Utah, and formerly of Mayer, Ariz., died unexpectedly on Sunday, May 18, 2008, at the home of his son in Canadensis, Pa. He was the husband of Winfred M. (Smith) Johnson, to whom he was married for over 61 years.

Born in Winstead, Conn., he was the son of the late Francis A. and Elizabeth M. (Felmer) Johnson.

Before his retirement, Martin was employed as a telephone repairman for 28 years with Mountain Bell and Qwest. He then worked for independent telephone contractors in California.

During World War II, Martin served in the 3rd Jasco, 3rd Division of the 2nd Battalion of the United States Marine Corps on the islands of Guam and Iwo Jima.

He was a devout Catholic who for many years served as a volunteer for the St. Francis DePaul charities and the Mayer, Ariz., elders.

In addition to his wife, Winifred, he is survived by a son, Martin G. Johnson Jr. of Canadensis, Pa.; four daughters, Marlene Humphrey of Springville, Utah, Enell Brown and Patricia Clandening, both of Mayer, Ariz., and Theresa Asbury of Prescott Valley, Ariz.; 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

A memorial mass will be 9 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 7, 2008, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Mayer, Ariz. Interment will be 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 11, 2008, at the Veterans Cemetery in Salt Lake, Utah.
