John Orr Theobald II, a native of Phoenix, and 34-year active member of the State Bar of Arizona, died at his home in Phoenix on May 1, 2003. He was born on April 22, 1944 at Good Samaritan Hospital, and John grew up on West Encanto Blvd. attending Kenilworth School from kindergarten through eighth grade and West High School for the following four years, graduating in 1962. As one of John's high school classmates once described, John achieved the unique "triple crown" at West High by being selected as an American Field Service Foreign Exchange student, being elected student body president and graduating as valedictorian of his class. John graduated from Princeton University in 1966 and earned his law degree in 1969 from the University of Arizona College of Law. John joined the law firm of Evans, Kitchel & Jenckes and in 1972 left to join W.R Schulz & Associates. He started his own law firm in 1973 with John McLoone, which later added Martin Galbut and became McLoone. Theobald & Galbut. From 1988 to 2000 John was Senior Vice President and General Counsel of Gosnell Builders. He then assumed the CEO position at Harrington Arthritis Research Center and steered that organization to the creation of the Harrington Department of Bioengineering at Arizona State University. In April of 2002, John joined the Stardust Companies in order to assist Jerry Bisgrove and Stardust Foundation in the creation and implementation of a twenty million dollar commitment for affordable housing and family support services. At the time of his death, John was the Chairman of the Governing Board of St. Luke's Hospital, Chairman of the Board of the Arizona Alzheimer's Research Center, Inc., a board member of St. Luke's Health Initiatives and the Arizona Historical Foundation. He was a member of the Paradise Valley Country Club and a director/member of the Valley Field Riding and Polo Club.

He is survived by his wife Jennifer, daughters Laura OPDENAKER (Mike) and Patsy THEOBALD, stepsons Ryan MARTIN (Maureen) and Christopher MARTIN (Angie) and five grandchildren, nephew James SHOEMAKER (Suzie) and nieces Deanna WILKINSON (Curt) and Suzanne SHOEMAKER. A memorial service for John was held at All Saints Episcopal Church, 6300 N. Central Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Trinity Cathedral and Trinity Hospice.
