Virginia Mary (Johnson) Shikany

Virginia Mary Shikany of Phoenix, Arizona passed away peacefully while surrounded by her family on December 31, 2003.

Virginia was born on May 29, 1923 to Roy and Miriam Johnson in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

She is survived by her loving husband of 56 years, Jim; her sons; Jim, who passed away in 1975, and Peter; her daughters; Mary O'Dowd (John) and Cathy Rowe of Fort Collins, Colorado; her grandchildren: Shauna (Robert Brown), Sarah (John Garigan), John (Jennifer), Mary Elizabeth, Ellen, Kelli (Marc Beasley) and Andrea Rowe; her great grandchildren: Kristin, Robert, Jacob, Michael, Jimmy, Madison and Jackson; her brother Roy Johnson; her sisters Maurine Derksen and Marguerite Olson; dozen of nieces and nephews and many loving friends. Virginia devoted her life to her husband, her family & service to others.

She was a Eucharistic Minister at St. Jerome & St. Pauls Catholic Churches. She read the Wall Street Journal on-air at Sun Sounds Radio for the Blind for 20 years. She also worked as a volunteer probation officer, for The City of Phoenix helping many young women find a better life. Being an avid golfer, she was a member of Moon Valley and Pinewood Country Clubs. She won a number of womens tournaments and several couples tournaments with her husband Jim. She left a lasting impression on all who knew her.

Virginia was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a true friend to many. She lived a life of great dignity, compassion and love. She will be missed deeply by all who knew her. The family would also like to offer a special thanks to Mari Jane and Shelley of Hospice of the Valley and to Dr. Albert Wendt and his nurse, Diane.

Visitation will be Tuesday Jan. 6th, 2004, with a rosary at Hansen Chapel, 8314 N. 7th St., Phoenix, AZ. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 7th at St. Paul's Catholic Church, 330 West Coral Gables Drive, Phoenix. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix, Arizona 85014.
