Franklin Fredrick "Bud" Sanders died Aug. 23, 2008. Bud was born in Cripple Creek, Colo., in the winter of 1921 to Harry and Ruth Sanders. He was the third of 10 children.

He excelled academically as well as in all sport activities. He was a Boy Scout and later earned his Eagle Scout.

After his tour with the U.S. Navy, Bud returned to Cripple Creek and began his career at the Blue Front Grocery. Later, he became partners with the owner and eventually bought the business. Miners and their families depended on the Blue Front to provide food.

In 1957 Bud married Mary Fay Lemon. She had three children, Darlene, Jim and Mary Theresa. The entire family worked in the grocery store business until 1963 when the price of gold dropped to $32 an ounce. Most families had to leave Cripple Creek, and because of that, the store was forced to close due to unpaid credit accounts.

Bud began a job as Teller County assessor for many years until he was sworn in as the postmaster of Cripple Creek for 35 years. He was a cornerstone in Cripple Creek, Colo., Elks Lodge beginning as chaplin, then esquire, leading knight, loyal knight and exalted ruler.

He also served on the school board, was a volunteer for the fire department, member of the Masons and belonged to the Bison Fishing Club. He volunteered to drive school students to out-of-town activities.

Bud's eyesight deteriorated and he eventually went blind. In the later years he was in a nursing home where he passed away.

He is survived by wife Mary Sanders and children Darlene Halstead, both of Colorado Springs, Colo., Jim Robinson (Carol) of Florence, Colo., and Mary Theresa (Michael) Cothrun of Pinedale; grandchildren Stacey (Don) McMillin, Shannon (Troy) Hern, Jodi Robinson, Diana (Jay) Robinson, Seth (Harper) Cothrun, Jacinda Cothrun and Bryan Cothrun; and great-grandchild Trevor Robinson.

A celebration of his life was held Sept. 6 at the Cripple Creek Elks Lodge 316 in Colorado.
