Richard S. Otness passed away Aug. 7, 2008, in Prescott, Ariz. Born Jan. 3, 1935, in Fairfax, Minn.,

he is preceded in death by his best friend and beauti-ful wife of nearly 50 years, Mary Ellen Otness.

He is survived by his brother Jack Otness of St. George, Utah; his son Kristofer Otness of Arcata, Calif.; and his daughter Jennifer and grandson Dylan Griffith of Prescott, Ariz.

As a child Richard loved adventure and once ran away from home to join the circus. After serving in the Navy Reserve, he graduated from Mankato State University and later earned his Masters in Business Education and School Administration at Oregon State University. A lifelong educator, he worked for the San Juan Unified School District for 38 years, taking a short break from 1982 to 1985 to teach at Yavapai College in Prescott. Richard loved golf, photography and coaching his son Kristofer in baseball. He and Mary enjoyed exploring California’s coastline, sailing, fishing and playing bridge.

A memorial service for Richard and Mary will be 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008, at the Unity Church of Prescott.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Richard and Mary’s name to YRMC Hospice of Prescott.
