Today's News-Herald, Lake Havasu City, Arizona Published Tuesday, December 7, 2010 Lawrence Evert Barringer, or “Poppy” as he was known to his family and friends, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Dec. 5, 2010, at his home in Lake Havasu City. Poppy was born March 24, 1922, on the family farm near Laurelville, Ohio, to Alva and Bessie Barringer. He was the 10th of 14 children. He loved to tell stories about life on the farm. Poppy graduated from Gibisonville High School in a class of six students. He married the love of his life, Martha Jane Ball, Dec. 23, 1943, in the church parsonage in Columbus, Ohio. They moved to California in 1945 where their only child, Dennis, was born. Larry worked as an electrician for more than 40 years. Following his retirement in 1986, they moved to Lake Havasu City to be near their son, Dennis, his wife, Marcia, and grandsons, Damon and Jeff. Poppy’s greatest joy was his family and helping others. He could do anything and fix any problem he set his mind to. If he didn’t understand how something worked, he would research it at the library and solve the problem. Everyone knew to just “call Poppy, he can fix anything.” Poppy is survived by his son, Dennis (Marcia) Barringer, of Lake Havasu City; grandson, Damon (Karen) Barringer and new great granddaughter, Addison Rae, whom he affectionately called “Half-Pint,” of Las Vegas, Nev.; grandson, Jeff Barringer, of Encinitas, Calif.; sisters, Thelma Lachman, Margie Davis and Doris (Gene) Augustine; brother-in-law, Birl Tatman, all of Ohio; nephew, David Reinhard (Joyce), of Rancho Mirage, Calif.; niece, Miriam (Dick) Oldenburg of Las Vegas, Nev.; grandniece, Felicia (Jim) McCaughey, of Santa Fe, N.M.; grandnephew, Brian Reinhard, of Santa Barbara, Calif.; grandnephew, Todd (Cate) Abernathy, of Anaheim, Calif.; niece, Jeanette (Ray) Wilkins, of Logan, Ohio; and many other nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of nearly 62 years, Martha; brothers, William Boyd and Harold Barringer; and sisters, Ruth Smith, Lucille Culbertson, Mary Kreachbaum, Mabel Slavick, Louis Burgett, Betty Huffman and Edith Tatman. For everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven; a time to be born and a time to die. Ecclesiastes 3:1. We love you Poppy and will miss you always. Memorial services will take place Saturday, 2 p.m. at Lietz-Fraze Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 2929 South 48th St., Tempe, AZ 85282.
