Helen (Cruze) Wykoff Cordez

Dorothy Cordes was born in Columbus, Neb., on Nov. 4, 1924, to

Helen Dorothea (Schroeder) and Chester Wright Cruze, and died on Sept. 18, 2008.

She grew up in Logansport, Ind., and graduated from Ball State Teachers College (now Ball State University) in Muncie, Ind., in 1947, having majored in music and English. She was a member of the Omega Sigma Chi sorority and professional music and English organizations Sigma Alpha Lota and Sigma Tau Delta.

In 1948, Dorothy married Paul Wykoff and the couple came to Arizona to live, making their home in Tempe until

1961. At that time, Paul and Dorothy and their four children moved to Prescott, Ariz. Mr. Wykoff died in 1965. In 1969 Dorothy and Cal Cordes were married. Dorothy taught various levels of public school music and English in Galveston, Ind.; Tempe, Ariz.; and Prescott, retiring in 1986. During her teaching years in Prescott, she was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma educational organization and, in 2000, was inducted into the Prescott High School Circle of Excellence. Among her many interests were traveling, reading, music, gardening, antiques and historic homes. She was involved in establishing the East Prescott Historical Preservation District for her neighborhood.

Dorothy was a long-time volunteer at Prescott Samaritan Village and a member of American Lutheran Church.

She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Calvin Cordes; sons Gary (Meredith) Wykoff, Philip Wykoff, and Kelly (Tusanne) Cordes; daughters Kay and Kristine Wykoff; grandchildren Jennifer (Brian) Romero, Michael, Paul and Emily Wykoff, Kristen, Matt, Kimberly, Keri and Kali Wykoff, Heather (Garrett) Mead, Tyler Trapp, Andrew and Aaron Cordes; and greatgrandchildren Ryan Lizama, Deacon Paul, and Jacob and Emmers-en Romero.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008, at the American Lutheran Church, 1085 Scott Drive, Prescott, AZ 86301.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to Prescott Samaritan Village, 1030 Scott Drive Prescott, AZ 86301, or the American Lutheran Church Music Fund, using the church address, or Granite Mountain Hospice and Home Care, 3107 Clearwater Drive, Prescott, AZ 86305.

Hampton Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
