William Guthrie Packard

Services were Monday at the Chapel of Our Saviour in Colorado Springs, Colo., for William Guthrie Packard, who died Nov. 19 at the age of 98.

Mr. Packard was a longtime winter resident of Wickenburg, at Rancho de los Caballeros.

He was the founder, president and builder of Shepard’s Citations. He erected the Shepard Citation Building and moved for New York City to Colorado Springs in 1946.

Mr. Packard served the company for more than 50 years.

He was born in Oxford, N.Y., Oct. 13, 1889.

He was educated at Oxford Academy, Rutgers Preparatory School, St. Paul’s School, Cornell University and the New York Law School.
Mr. Packard was a member of the New York Athletic Club world’s record relay team in 1912. During WWI he was a naval aviator. He was a member of the Naval Aviation Commandery and the Golden Eagles.

He was a charter member of the Pikes Peak Range Riders and an honorary member of the El Paso Club. He was also a member of the Country Club of Colorado, the Garden of the Gods Club and the Balboa Club of Mazatland, and also a member of the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Davis Packard of Colorado Springs; four daughters, Merriam Sargent of Corwin Springs, Mont., Deborah McIlwaine of Franconia, N.H., Karen de Plaque of La Jolla, Calif., and Sabra Guthrie Packard of La Jolla, Calif.; two sons, William Guthrie Packard, Jr., of Scottsdale, and Peter Davis Packard of Paradise Valley; 15 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
