Jack R. Schmid, 83, of Prescott passed away just after midnight on Sept. 16, 2008, after a bout with congestive heart failure. Jack was born Oct. 3, 1924, to Hugo C. Schmid and Laura W. Schmid (née in Chicago, Ill.

After distinguishing himself in high school by winning the city of
Chicago in wrestling and graduating from Amundson High School in 1942, he served his country in WWII from 1943-1945. Jack was a second-class electrician on the U.S. Navy submarine USS Sailfish, and spent that time in the Pacific.

While attending college in Austin, Minn., Jack found the love of his life, Jean M. Beeman, and only weeks later they eloped, married on Oct. 16, 1948. In the next few years, the two of them had three children and Jack continued his education.

A lifelong lover of animals, he nearly pursued a career in veterinary medicine, but instead settled on pharmacology, obtaining a bachelor’s and master’s degree at Michigan State University and his doctorate at the University of Arkansas.

A few years after the birth of their fourth child in 1961, Jack began his career at 3M in 1966 as a senior cardiovascular pharmacologist. In his years as a research specialist in New Molecule Research, he played a part in the development of several important heart drugs and was the co-discoverer of Tambocor, of which he was most proud. Jack retired in 1988.

He and his wife chose Prescott, Ariz., as their new home and round dancing as their new hobby. Among Jack’s many interests were fishing, snow skiing, working outdoors, and playing the mandolin. He loved his family very much.

He is survived by his constant companion and wife Jean M. Schmid; brother Norman Schmid; sister Joan Hartmann; four children, Jesse Schmid, Jane Parr, Jeanette Bennett and John Schmid; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents and two infant siblings.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Oct. 4, 2008, at St. Germaine Catholic Church, 7997 E. Dana Drive, Prescott Valley. Immediately afterward at 12:30 p.m., a reception will be at Granite Gate, 3850 N. Highway 89 in Prescott.
