| The White Mountain Independent, Show Low, Arizona ~ October 1, 2009 Fidencio Avelisio Baca, 79, died at his residence in Springerville Sept. 28, 2009. He was born in Springerville Jan. 29, 1930. "Fide" served his country in the U.S. Navy and was decorated for his Korean service, National Defense and United Nations Good Conduct Medal. He was an active member of the VFW. He was a historian and a guide at Casa Malpais. He worked for the Town of Springerville at the senior center for approximately 15 years. Fidencio received his bachelor's degree in 1958 and in 1960 enrolled at the University of Bogota, Columbia, and visited many historical and archaeological sites in Columbia and Central Mexico. He was an educator in the early '90s and taught at St. Mary's High School in Phoenix and several schools in New Mexico. He researched the history of St. Peter's Catholic Church and the chronology of all priests that served there. Fide was devoted to his dogs. He is survived by his brothers, Ernest Baca, Johnny Baca and Pat Baca Jr.; sisters Julia Perez, Cruz Milligan, Sophie Peña, Margaret Baca and Lucy Baca Silva. Fidencio was preceded in death by his biological parents, Patricio C. Baca and Elisaria Baca; brothers Frank Baca, Tony Baca, Roxy Rodriques and Leroy Baca; adoptive parents Justo Baca and Beneranda Baca Padilla; and sister Inez Gonzales. Rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Springerville. Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 9, 2009, also at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Springerville Historical Society. Burnham Mortuary of Eagar/Springerville handled arrangements.
