William B. (Bill) Stump

Posted 2008-10-21 by Edward Peed
William B. “Bill” Stump, 83, of Kearny passed away Jan. 5, 2006 in Mesa.

He was born in Grantsville, West Virginia where he was raised and educated. He completed several advanced accounting courses from La Salle and International Accounting Society Business Extension Schools. He also participated in Executive Development programs at Arizona State University and the University of Utah.

His Kennecott career began in 1947 as a warehouse clerk at the mines plant. He held various clerical and accounting posts until 1959 when he was promoted to supervisor of general accounting at Kennecott’s Arizona operation. He became assistant division comptroller in June 1969 and later transferred to the Salt Lake City, Utah Copper Division where he served as administrative accountant. Mr. Stump was named comptroller for Kennecott’s Ray Mines Division in 1972, replacing Clarence R. Knous, who held the post for 16 years, ending a 48-year career with Kennecott Copper Company. Mr. Stump later transferred to the Utah Copper Division as comptroller.

While residing in the Hayden/Winkelman area the first time, Mr. Stump was active in community affairs. He served on the Hayden Town Council and was a member of the Hayden Planning and Zoning Commission. He was also a member and past president of the Board of Trustees, Copper Belt School District and was on the Executive board of the Arizona School Board Association.

His affiliations included the National Association of Accountants, American Legion, Knights of Pythias and the I&AM. In World War II, he served in the Armored Infantry and the USA Force.

Mr. Stump and his wife Boneta (deceased) are the parents of four children, Beverly, Joni, William L. and Teresa.

In 1983, Mr. Stump married Mary Dee Bracamonte, widow of Robert R. Bracamonte. The couple resided in Salt Lake City until 1986 when Mr. Stump retired. He was not able to adjust to retirement and joined Phelps Dodge Corporation as director of the tax research and analysis. The couple established residences in Phoenix and Kearny.

He retired again in 1989 and moved to Kearny. Still not being able to “just retire,” he worked for the Town of Hayden doing accounting.

His illness became evident in 2002 and his health slowed him down. He never gave up, even when he was unable to walk. He always had tax papers he would read and study. To quite a few young people he became known as “The Tax Man.”

Mr. Stump was also preceded in death by his beloved sisters whom he adored, Elenore Brannon of West Virginia and Louise Ferrell of Ohio. He loved visiting his family and would always talk to his stepchildren about “the Farm.”

Mr. Stump is survived by his wife, Mary Dee Stump; stepdaughter, Roberta (Peter) Guzman; stepson, Arthur M. Bracamonte; daughters, Beverly (Frank) Gyenizse, Joni (Sean R.) Akbarian and Teresa M. Pacheco; son, William L. (Carol A.) Stump; grandchildren, Jennifer (David) Elvira, Lisa N. Guzman, Preston Guzman, Preston Daniel Guzman, Monique (Christopher) Straughan, Katy A. Akbarian, Michael B. Stump, Aaron Stump, Brina M. (Eddie) Miller, Marcus Pacheco and Keirsten J. Pacheco; and great-grandchildren, Paul Robert, Alexandria and Julianna Elvira, Jackson C. and Phoebe L. Straughan, and Dillon and Parker Miller.

Memorial services for Mr. Stump were held Monday, Jan. 9, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Kearny. After the services, a luncheon was served at the Infant Jesus of Prague Hall.

Griffith Mortuary assisted the family with arrangements.
