Jerry Louis Slater, age 67 of Apache Junction, passed away on Feb. 24, 2011 at Copper Cottage Hospice in Mesa, Ariz. Jerry was born in Kalamazoo, Mich. on Sept. 13, 1943.

Jerry worked as a maintenance mechanic most of his life and actually retired with the Globe Public Works after working there for eight years.

Jerry liked to “tinker” with things in his garage. He loved to build things or fix what was broken. He was a kind, generous man with a sense of humor and was full of wisdom. Jerry has a colorful presence and was Santa Claus in Globe for the past 10 years (with the exception of last year). He will be dearly missed but we all know that God needed a Santa in heaven.

Jerry is preceded in death by his mother and father, William and Emma Slater; brothers, Richard and Carl; and sisters, Shirley and “Gin.”

He is survived by his dear wife, Rose “Carolyn;” daughter, Robin Grissom; son, Jerry L. Slater II; brothers, Charlie and William; sisters, Helen and Margaret; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Jerry passed away of a short aggressive bout with cancer and chose not to have a funeral service and donated his body to science. Cards may be sent to Rose Slater at 945 S. Saguaro, Apache Junction, AZ 85120.

In honor of Jerry’s memory, Rose would like us to do a kind deed for someone today because “Jerry would have.”
