Betty Randolph Coxwell, who with her husband was instrumental in chartering one of the first Best Western motels in the nation in Wickenburg, died Friday, October 29 in Sun City West. Mrs. Coxwell, of Wickenburg, was 78 at the time of her death.

Mrs. Coxwell was born in Taft, California to Elfie and Mabel Randolph of February 21, 1921 and spent most of her early years in Long Beach, California. It was there she met her husband, Roy P. Coxwell of Wickenburg, while he was attending the Southern California Military Academy. The couple was married in 1942 and made Wickenburg their home for nearly 60 years.

In 1946 the Coxwells purchased the Palm Court in downtown Wickenburg and changed the name to the Rancho Grande. Their family continues to operate this Wickenburg landmark today. The Coxwells were charter members of Best Western Hotels, which also began in 1946, and is now the world’s largest lodging chain. In addition to the hotel operation, Mrs. Coxwell was also active in the family-owned Gold Nugget Restaurant, also in downtown Wickenburg.

Many Wickenburg organizations benefitted by the participation of Betty Coxwell. She was for many years an active member of St. Alban Episcopal Church and was a member of both their altar guild and woman’s guild. She was a member and longtime supporter of the Desert Caballeros Western Museum, a charter member of the Las Senoras de Socorro, a member of Las Damas, the hospitality auxiliary and had been very active in the Wickenburg PTA during her children’s years in school here.

Mrs. Coxwell is survived by her husband Roy; her son Randolph (Randy) Coxwell and daughter and son-in-law Royce and Glenn Kardinal, all of Wickenburg; and three granddaughters, Kimberly Gibbs of Redondo Beach, California, Kristan McPeeters of Peoria; and Kelsea Kardinal of Denver, Colorado.

Memorial services were held at St. Alban Episcopal Church on Saturday, October 30 with the Rev. Dan Gerrard officiating. Interment followed at the Wickenburg cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Desert Caballeros Western Museum.

Brown’s Wickenburg funeral Home handled all arrangements.
