Betty J. (Beaty) Dickie

Betty J. (Beaty) Dickie, loving wife and mother, passed away on December 20, 2002 after a long battle with cancer. She was a longtime resident of Tempe, moving there in 1956 having first visited in 1938.

She was born in Fullerton, Calif., November 17, 1923. After graduating from Fullerton High School at the start of WW II, she became an assembler on a production line for B-24 bombers. On June 6, 1944 she joined the U.S. Army Air Corps. Her last assignment at the end of the war was with the special communications section supporting the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

After graduation from the School of Engineering at Arizona State University in 1968, she became a technical writer for aerospace firms in the Valley. She was once the Arizona female 4-wheel off road driving champion. During her retirement years she traveled extensively throughout North and South America, Europe and Africa. As a volunteer at the Phoenix Zoo, she donated over 2,000 hours as a guide. She was instrumental in organizing the Kachina Chapter (#81) of the Women's Army Corps Veterans Association where she held many offices and was the immediate past president.

She is survived by her husband of over 40 years, Lee, 2 sons and daughters-in-law, Al and Paulette of Paradise Valley and Bob and Chris of Coto de Caza, Calif., five grandchildren, Garret, Lindsey, Steven, Ryan and Shawn two sisters, Millie Heidi of Twenty-Nine Palms, Calif., and Margie Phlugrad of Sun City, Ariz. Family services will be private.

Internment will be at the Veterans National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, Phoenix, Ariz.

Donations in her name may be made to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St. Phoenix, Ariz., 85014.
