John A. A. (Jack) Winther

CLARKDALE, Ariz. - John "Jack" A.A. Winther, 86, of Clarkdale, Ariz., died Sunday, July 14, 2002. He was a self-employed citrus and olive rancher for 40 years.

A resident of Clarkdale, Ariz., for the last 10 years, he was a native of Lindsay, born there July 31, 1915. During World War II, Jack served in the U.S. Army as a sergeant for four years. After the war he returned to Lindsay where he worked, ranching, on Spruce Avenue. His father planted the original groves in 1914. Jack also worked for Lindsay Ripe Olives for a short period he helped build the first olive pitter. He was on the board of directors of M.O.D., later known as Pure Gold, for 10 years. He was president of the Sierra Chamber of Commerce, in Pineherst for five years.

Jack married Vivian Breashears in 1948. She preceded him in death in 1971. He married Barbara Martin in 1972 and, after Jack retired in 1981, he and Barbara made their home in La Verkin, Utah. Later they relocated to Clarkdale, Ariz. Jack and Barbara enjoyed their motor home for 25 years, traveling across the United States and Canada.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Rose Winther, of Clarkdale, Ariz. two sons, Wayne Breashears of Oregon and Michael Martin of Visalia three daughters, Ellen Scott of Visalia, Penny Haines of Victorville and Jean Branum of Porterville 16 grandchildren 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Graveside services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at Lindsay-Strathmore Cemetery with the Rev. Paul Leavens officiating. Arrangements are by Webb-Sanders Funeral Home, Lindsay.
