Ketsy Smith, 58, passed away at her home in Prescott on Nov. 13, 2008. She was born in Colorado and grew up on her family's ranch amid the rural beauty of the Western slope.

She was fascinated by science and the natural world, and fittingly graduated with a degree in Pharmacy from the University of Colorado in Boulder. During her final year of study, she was swept off her feet by a handsome Marine, Walter Smith Jr., at the breakfast table of their boarding house. They were married in Ketsy's hometown of DeBeque, Colo., in 1976.

After their wedding, Ketsy and her husband began their life together in Reno, Nev. From there, they conducted a thorough search for the perfect place to settle. They moved into their first apartment on Carlton Street in Prescott in 1976. Ketsy worked in several Prescott pharmacies, but she especially enjoyed her last 18 years of service at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Ketsy was a proud mother of three children: Dana Smith, a water rights attorney in Las Vegas, Nev.; Ryan Smith, an Air Force pilot stationed in Enid, Okla.; and Adria Smith, an art student living in Los Angeles, Calif.

She is survived by her husband Walter Smith of Prescott; her mother Allie Lou Etcheverry of Loma, Colo.; her sister Paula Walls of Loma, Colo.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father Thomas Etcheverry of DeBeque, Colo.

Her greatest joys came in the simplest forms: small, weathered rocks collected by her children, a decisive fall breeze and the tangible satisfaction of crafting a complicated quilt. She enjoyed hiking with her family, reading, watercolor painting and sewing. She will be remembered for her warm smile, down-to-earth charisma and her infinitely patient nature.

A memorial for family and friends will be 10 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 23, 2008m at the Hampton Funeral Home in Prescott, Ariz.
