Andrew A. Hughes Jr., 'Andy' to his many friends, of Sedona, Arizona, passed away on August 15, 2002. He was born on November 4, 1929 in Hastings, Nebraska.

He was raised in the Midwest, graduating from Central High School in Sioux City, Iowa in 1947. Qualifying for a 4-year Naval R.O.T.C. scholarship, he attended Iowa State College in Ames, where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. He graduated in 1951, with a degree in mechanical engineering and received a commission as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy.

His Naval assignments took him to Korea, and many other areas of the world, fostering his lifelong enjoyment of travel. Completing his Naval duties in 1955, he moved to Kansas City, Missouri, where he became plant manager of Proctor and Gamble in the Clorox Division.

Mr. Hughes moved to Sedona with his family in 1974, and took over Andy Hughes Realty, the real estate company established by his father. He spearheaded the formation of the Sedona-Verde Valley Board of Realtors, and became its first president. He enjoyed training new agents, many of whom are still active today.

In 1980 he married Nancy Baker and added her children, Doug and Karen McMaster, Laurie and Jeff Clements and Jeff McMaster, to his family. His own children, Jeffery and Beth Hughes, Barbara and Mike Souris, Becky and Dana Smerchek and Linda and Craig Gering, along with Nancy's children, and 13 grandchildren, brought an enormous amount of pride into his life. He loved to plan 'get-togethers' for the whole family.

Mr. Hughes is also survived by his former wife, Jean Harrison, of Sedona, and his loving sister, Marilyn and her husband Tom Manson, who reside in Phoenix.

A charter member of the Sedona Midday Rotary, he was also founder, past president and a Paul Harris Fellow with that organization. In 1990 he envisioned a Fourth of July Celebration in Sedona called Western Americana Week. He organized a large, dedicated committee to produce this week of patriotic events highlighted by a concert with the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra and singer, Brenda Lee. He continued to lead Western American Week for four years.

A celebrations of his life will be held Saturday, August 24, at 11:00 a.m., at the Church of the Red Rocks in Sedona.

The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Sedona Historical Society, P.O. Box 10216, Sedona, Ariz., 86339.

Arrangements by Moore-Grimshaw Mortuary.
