Leona Mildred (Clark) Wertman

Leona Mildred Clark Wertman, 83, of Cottonwood, Arizona died on Monday, December 9th. She was born in Alta, Iowa on January 4, 1919.

She graduated from Iowa State Teachers College (Now University of Northern Iowa.) She married James Wertman on May 23, 1943 in Alta, Iowa.

Leona taught school in Villisca, Iowa from 1942-1971. She taught English, Reading, Social Studies, and Physical Education. She developed the Physical Education into a full time school program.

After retiring, Leona and Jim moved to Cottonwood in 1973. Jim was a supervisor for Cordes Water Works and Leona sewed for Alfredo's Wife.

Leona was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Cottonwood, and was a fifty-four year member of P.E.O. She belonged to Chapter I in Cottonwood, Ariz., for 30 years. She also was a sixty year member of the Order of the Eastern Star serving as Worthy Matron and she was a member of the American Legion Women's Auxillary Chapter 25.

Leona is survived by her two children Kathy Hampton of Phoenix and Phil Wertman of Grand Junction, Colorado; four grandsons: Matthew Musgrove of Phoenix, Richard J. Ingersoll of Minnesota, Nathan Wertman of Colorado, Seth Wertman of Idaho; three great-grandchildren: Zachary Krossman of Phoenix, Faith and Zoe Ingersoll of Minnesota.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Wertman, her parents, Leonard and Eunice Clark, a brother, Ret. Colonel Donald Clark, a sister, Thelma Beddoes, an infant daughter, Sally Jo and a grand-daughter, Melinda Musgrove.

Memorial services were held on December 11th atthe Westcott Funeral Home 1013 E. Mingus Ave. Cottonwood, Ariz.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the American Lung Association or to the Verde Valley, Arizona Humane Society.
